Dry, chapped lips a problem? Natural beauty products expert Spirit Demerson says your lip balm might actually be to blame — many contain synthetic fragrances, essential oils, and mineral pigments that can dry out your lips. Learn what to use instead in this video.

There are so many natural and organic remedies for lip problems like chronic dry lips. If you have chronic dry lips, ironically it might actually be caused by lip balm or lipstick. Lip balms and lipsticks can contain synthetic fragrances, essential oils and even mineral pigments that can actually dry out the lips, and the more you apply them the drier your lips get, even though they feel conditioned and softened when you first put them on. So one of the ways to sort of combat the drying that lip balms and lipsticks can cause is to use a base layer before using a lipstick so, condition your lips with an unscented lip balm that doesn’t contain any essential oils before applying your lipstick. And if you still have lips that are peeling, a great way to speed up the exfoliation process is to just to mix a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of coconut oil and massage it into your lips just like you would a face scrub. If your lips are starting to get a little bit pursed, they have lines, or they look a little deflated, that’s definitely from dehydration and some lip balms do not penetrate the lips enough to rehydrate them or plump them back up. So what you’ll want to do in that case is a hydrating lip mask, and that can be as simple as just applying a honey or a coconut oil all over the mouth and lip area, and then applying a hot steamed towel over that and letting it sit until the towel goes back down to room temperature or cools. The steam will cause the, the humectant properties of the honey or the moisturizing properties of the coconut oil to sort of penetrate your skin and plump the area back up. So there’s lots of natural ways of dealing with any number of chronic dry lip problems.
